I saw a cute idea in a magazine for making Halloween shirts and thought we would give it a try. We stopped at JoAnns and picked up basic white t-shirts (they were 50% off!). And also picked up some RIT orange dye, rubber bands and a black sharpie. When we got home I laid out some newspaper but realized that I didn't need to as our project would take a little longer than I anticipated. Lay out the t-shirt on a flat surface and have each child gather up small bits of fabric and tie the rubber band around it(make sure they aren't rubber banding the front and back together). The thicker your rubber bands are the wider of circle you will have.
Makayla was able to pretty much do it on her own.
Dylan could help out by pointing to where he wanted his circle and putting it on the 1st time and I got it tighter. You can do many different circles or one big one with little ones inside. It is fun to experiment with these.Next dye your t-shirts in a sink or wash bin.
I got 1 package of RIT and it did pretty well for 2 small t-shirts. I did have to flip them over a few times to make sure they got dyed evenly. I would recommend getting more of you have any more than 2 shirts. You have to let them sit in the dye for at least 30 minutes, longer if you want the shirts darker. Afterwards you rinse the shirts until the water runs clear and then let them dry. When the shirts are dry you are ready to draw your pumpkin faces inside the circles! Again Makayla was able to do this on her own and I helped Dylan out. He did 2 of them which are cute. And vola! Again, kind of a long process but super cute when they are done.
